Wauwatosa teen back home after Brown University shooting
WAUWATOSA, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Lilly Murat was days away from wrapping up her first semester of college at Brown University, when tragedy unfolded on campus.
"It's such a gift to be able to have presents under the tree and be here to actually open them, because now two of my classmates won't be able to do that," said Murat.
Murat graduated as valedictorian from Wauwatosa West High School and earned a full ride scholarship to Brown University.
The 19-year-old is holding her family extra close this holiday season, grateful to be reunited with her family after her world was turned upside down Saturday.
"Yeah, you don’t really ever expect that would happen to you," said Murat.
Lilly was among the thousands of students preparing for finals and studying in her dorm with a friend, when she got a text warning her about an active shooter on campus.
"We just both broke down, because it's like you don’t really think you ever will have to call your parents and tell them that," said Murat.
She says she was barricaded in her dorm through the night, devastated to find out two students were killed and several others were injured.
"I think it really just changes the way we are going to go about life," said Murat. "I know even right now we can't think about anything else. I go to bed, it's all I think about. I wake up and I can't believe that it's still going on"
Heartbroken someone would attack the people and place she calls her new home.
"At Brown it's such a friendly and open-minded place and if it can happen here, it can happen anywhere," said Murat.
Uneasy as the search for answers continues, wanting the person responsible held accountable.
"Theres probably going to be a lot of fear with walking around, especially if we don't have answers yet," said Murat. "I'm not sure how people will be able to go to a classroom or a lecture hall and not turn their back and not have their head on a swivel. I'm glad I'm home safe, but I think we all just want answers."
