Waukesha school delays 4K start date by 1 week due to flooding in classrooms

WAUKESHA, Wis. (CBS 58) – Students in 4K at Hadfield Elementary School will have to wait another week before they can return back to school. In their classrooms, the young people normally holding paintbrushes for arts and crafts are currently being replaced by crews repainting walls.

Historic flooding in the area last month damaged two 4K rooms. Carrie Mareno and Amy Dorow lost cabinets, walls and classroom supplies.

“This is like our second home, our classroom is. It was hard,” Mareno said. “It’s basically like starting a new classroom from scratch.”

Principal Mike Elliott said after the flood, an environmental engineer determined everything inside the 4K classrooms from the floor up was a loss. The decision was made to delay the start of school by one week to help teachers restore materials.

“We had to come through and take out all the cabinets, all the wooden play structures, everything had to go,” Elliott said. “It’s tough to see all that gone, and some of it was personal items, pictures and things that people have donated to them.”

Elliott said he estimates the total damage to be close to $100 thousand. Elliott said families in the area have come together to support the school and get them ready for students to come back.

“We do have a pretty tremendous community here. Everybody pulls together and we work together and support one another,” Elliott said.

“We are just trying to get everything ready for students to come on Monday,” Mareno said.

4K is planned to start at Hadfield Elementary School on Sept. 8.
