WAUKESHA, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The Waukesha Police Department was involved in a shooting on Oakdale Drive, near Sunset Drive, on Wednesday, Dec. 14, that left one woman dead.

It happened at 3:35 p.m.

The officer was heard saying, "Shots fired, shots fired, shots fired, 1623 Oakdale. All units respond. I'm not sure if I've been hit."

One neighbor, Shawn Vergiels, described what he saw. He said, "Right after 3:30 I just heard like a bunch of sirens coming through the neighborhood and I look and I see cops in the alleyway. They're blocking off this road here," he said.

Police say they were doing a well-being check. The police were checking the house with the landlord. As officers went down to the basement, a female suspect was found and she fired shots at the officers.

Police say as shots were fired one officer was struck. That officer who was struck fired shots at the female suspect.

The officer told dispatch, "She's been shot multiple times. Unknown of her status, we're upstairs in the basement."

The Waukesha Police Department Deployable Technology Unit also responded to the scene and located the deceased female suspect in the basement.

The investigation is ongoing, but it appears the shot that hit the officer hit his ballistic vest, which covers the vital organs.

"Pretty much covering your lungs, your heart and if that officer was not wearing his ballistic vest the round would have most likely struck somewhere in his upper chest which is one of the vital organs and we potentially could have had a different story tonight," said Captain Baumann.

A firearm was also recovered at the scene.

Police closed roads off in the area.

One of the victim officers is 44 years old with 21 years of service. The other victim officer is 38 years old with 12 years of service. Both officers have been treated and are in good condition.
