MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Scammers are trying to take advantage of We Energies customers during the coronavirus pandemic. They're calling customers and telling them there is something going on with their meter and they need to replace it.
The scammers are telling customers it will cost them hundreds of dollars and they will need to pay with a prepaid credit card or their power will be disconnected.
We Energies said they will never make you pay to replace your meter.
A few dozen cases have been reported on Milwaukee's south side, Glendale, and Franklin.
Fortunately, no one has fallen for the scam that We Energies knows about at this time.
A We Energies spokeswoman said customers could be more vulnerable to fall prey to this scam because of the coronavirus outbreak.
"Being at home right now, working from home, having your kids do schooling from home. Everyone is really reliant on their energy right now. So when you get a phone call like this you think oh my goodness I need to pay what their saying, but again we do not do this. We’re taking care of our customers right now,” Amy Jahns, with We Energies, said.
If you receive a call like this, We Energies encourages you to call and report it. Also, We Energies does not disconnect anyone during the COVID-19 pandemic.
