NOW: Walk and Roll 2K raises awareness for homeless veterans services while promoting wellness

WAUKESHA, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The US Department of Veterans Affairs held its 15th Annual Walk and Roll Wednesday morning, May 21.

The dual-purpose event supports services for homeless veterans and promotes employee wellness.

Participants are encouraged to bring donations and take a two kilometer walk to support both mental and physical health.

Because of the rain, this year's event was moved inside, but that did not stop the community from rallying for a good cause.

"It is just tremendous to see the support," said Courtney Zeller, recreation therapist at Milwaukee VA Medical Center. "These donations mean so much to the veterans. When they get a house, it's hard to be able to pay for everything- from furniture to cleaning items, it all costs...it all adds up. So, any donation is so appreciated by them."

Donations will be collected on the day of the event in the Rec. Hall at the Milwaukee VA Medical Center in room 3435.

Donations can be dropped off through the end of May at the Patriot Store Veterans Canteen Service and at the Milwaukee VA Medical Center's Voluntary Service Office in building 70, C wing, room 16.
