Voting Starts to Name Baby Giraffe

Starting Friday, Milwaukee County Zoo visitors can vote to name the baby giraffe online.

The baby giraffe was born on September 16 and stands 5 feet, 9 inches tall.  His mother’s name is Ziggy and father’s name is Bahatika.

Zoo would like the public to help choose their favorite!

The names are:

  • Asante                 Swahili word meaning “thank you”

                           Also the name of this giraffe calf’s grandfather

  • Jua                        Swahili word meaning “sunrise”

  • Kayin                    Word of African origin; meaning “long awaited child”

  • Mwana                  Swahili word meaning “son”

  • Tafari                   Word of African origin; meaning “he who inspires awe”

              

Votes can be cast on the Zoo’s website:  milwaukeezoo.org

Anyone is eligible to vote; and one vote per person is appreciated.  Votes will be accepted beginning October 9 through midnight, October 15.  Votes will be tabulated, and the winning name will be announced at the Zoo on October 16 – marking the giraffe’s one-month birthday.
