Volunteers plant 1,200 purple tulips at Kilbourn Reservoir Park near future Stella's Playground site in honor of 9yo brain cancer survivor
CBS 58 MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- On Saturday, March 28, dozens of volunteers headed to Milwaukee's Kilbourn Reservoir Park to plant a small field of purple tulips.
It's all in honor of Stella Schneider, a nine-year-old (soon to be 10!) brain cancer survivor, whose favorite color is purple.
The 1,200 bulbs, gifted from a donor, are now placed near the site of what will become Stella's Playground -- the city's first universally accessible and inclusive playground featuring mobility device-friendly surfaces and pathways.
"Of course, slides, of course, monkey bars," Stella told CBS 58's Ellie Nakamoto-White. "I feel so good about this."
Her mother, Rese Schneider, became emotional when thinking about her daughter's bravery and resilience.
"When she was first diagnosed, we really had no idea what we were getting into," Schneider said. "She fought. She's the most determined person I know."
Stella faces cognitive issues, bilateral facial paralysis, and is in therapies for her mobility.
Her family said the community's ongoing support has meant everything.
"We don't have anything like this and to kind of rally around to say hey let's take something really awful that's happened to this kid and let's try to have it be our inspiration to do something really powerful and incredible for our community, it's great," Schneider said. "It's really, really special the way that folks have just come together."
Currently, they've raised about $1.1 million dollars, but they hope to raise double that amount and break ground this summer.
