UWM student robbed, sexually assaulted on city's east side

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee police say a student was the victim of an armed robbery/sexual assault Monday, April 17. 

They say it happened around 3:35 p.m. near N. Stowell Avenue and E. Park Place. 

The victim was reportedly walking from the Kenwood campus when a suspect displayed a handgun, demanded and obtained property, and then touched the victim inappropriately. 

Police say the suspect fled the scene on foot. 

The suspect is described as a Black male, 20-25 years of age, 5'9", 120 pounds, with a thin build, dark complexion and short black hair. He was wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt and armed with a black and silver handgun.

UWM police are sharing the following tips to reduce your chances of becoming a robbery victim:

1- Don’t walk alone, walk in a group or with a friend.
2- Don’t wear headphones while walking, day or night, be aware of the noises around you.
3- Don’t walk while using your phone! Your phone is a distraction that can cause you to be an easy target.
4- Overall, be aware of your surroundings! You never know who or what could be lurking nearby.
5- Staff, students, and faculty are urged to download the Rave Guardian App to receive UWM Emergency Alerts and access other safety features.
6- Utilize the B.O.S.S. safe ride service available to students.
7- Consider taking safety training provided by the UWM – Police Department.
8- If you are a victim of a robbery offer unconditional surrender. Valuables are replaceable, you are not!
