UW Health urges safety as Wisconsin enjoys pleasant summer weather ☀️
MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- UW Health recommends that Wisconsinites take safety precautions while embracing the pleasant summertime weather that Southeast Wisconsin has experienced lately.
The health organization issued a Friday, June 24 press release that emphasized the importance of proper sun protection to reduce the risk of skin cancer and sunburns.
Dr. Apple Bodemer, an integrative dermatologist at UW Health and clinical associate professor of dermatology at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, stated that limiting exposure to ultraviolet rays is crucial.
“Your risk for developing melanoma doubles if you have a history of five or more sunburns,” said Dr. Bodemer.
She advises using a mineral-based broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 and reapplying every two hours or after getting wet.
Dr. Bodemer also recommends avoiding sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., seeking shade, wearing protective clothing and using hats and sunglasses.
These behaviors are not only encouraged when the weather is particularly inviting, but also anytime people may be engaging in outdoor activities.
