USS Milwaukee combat ship decommissioned after nearly 8 years in service

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- After just under eight years in service, the USS Milwaukee littoral combat ship is being decommissioned.

A ceremony wrapped up Friday, Sept. 8, at its home port near Jacksonville, Florida.

According to a statement from the Navy, the USS Milwaukee is being decommissioned to cut costs, one of nine freedom class ships taken out of service.

The ship, built in Marinette, was involved in the seizure of an estimated $30 million in suspected cocaine during a drug trafficking operation along with other missions.

It was first secured for watch during a ceremony at Veterans Park back in November of 2015.
