US Navy Scraps Mailer Targeting Women Over Allegations it Sounds Condescending

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — U.S. Navy officials say they're scrapping a recruiting mailer targeting women over allegations the wording is condescending and perpetuates stereotypes.

The mailer says the Navy offers women a chance to do work "that most girls aren't even aware of" in career areas that "aren't just for the guys," all while staying in touch with their feminine sides.

The Navy says the wording doesn't reflect its values, noting that women make up 18 percent of the Navy and are indispensable to national security.
