WAUKESHA COUNTY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- As most drivers in Milwaukee know, a major expansion project on I-94 through the city is underway -- a project that will affect traffic for about eight years.

Now, there's talk about another I-94 project in Waukesha County.

The state Transportation Projects Commission (TPC) is looking at a potential highway project on I-94 between the Zoo Interchange and Willow Glen Road in Waukesha County. On Wednesday, the commission voted unanimously to advance a study -- the first step in determining whether it will move forward as a major highway project.

According to a statement from the Department of Transportation (DOT), that stretch of freeway has safety and operational needs because of heavy commuter traffic and limited capacity.

Also, 32 of the 52 bridges in that stretch are more than 60 years old and approaching the end of their design life.

“Improving Wisconsin’s transportation system depends on selecting the right projects for the right reasons and today’s vote demonstrates the TPC is functioning as it should – a bipartisan group deliberating and discerning what’s best for the state,” WisDOT Secretary Kristina Boardman said. “The TPC has met every year since 2019 which has led to major construction projects advancing along with new studies initiated. Today’s vote shows a shared interest in improving our roads throughout the state and doing what’s right for Wisconsin.”

The DOT says to move forward with construction, proposed projects need to undergo an environmental study and extensive evaluation.
