Traffic Closed on Highway 16 in La Crosse Following Police-Involved Shooting

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) - UPDATE (12:00 a.m.):

Traffic on Highway 16 remains closed in both directions between La Crosse Street and Gillette Street after shots are fired during a traffic stop.

The La Crosse County Sheriff's Department says they were investigating an incident from earlier Friday night when they found the suspect's car and pulled them over. Backup from the La Crosse Police Department was called when the suspect was not cooperative with the Sheriff's Deputy.

Authorities say once officers from the La Crosse Police Department reached the scene, the suspect got out of their vehicle and displayed a weapon. After various forms of force were used to try to control the suspect, the suspect charged the officers and was shot.

The police department tells News 8 the suspect was taken to an area hospital, but his condition was unknown to them at the time of this update.

No officers were hurt in the incident, which remains under investigation.
