Traffic alert: fuel spill causing problems on Interstate 41

UPDATE (10:30 a.m.) :

The Fond du Lac County Highway Department has finished spreading sand, which along with the rain, has improved driving conditions.

Traffic flow is back to normal at this time. The vehicles that slid off the interstate have been removed.

The Sheriff's Office was unable to determine the source of the spill.

The Fond du Lac County Sheriff's Office has issued a traffic alert after a fuel or oil spill on Interstate 41.

According to the Sheriff's Office, the spill on Interstate 41 southbound from Fond du Lac south to the Fond du Lac/Dodge County line has made the interstate extremely slippery.  The slippery conditions extend 5 to 7 miles from Fond du Lac south on I-41 to the Dodge County line.  

The cause or source of the substance has not been determined.

The Sheriff's Office says there are multiple vehicles in the ditch at this time and many are pulled over to the side of the road. No injuries have been reported.

Highway crews are cleaning up the fluid currently. The Sheriff's Office asks that you use extreme caution or avoid the area at this time.
