Towboat crashes into dam on Mississippi River

WISCONSIN (CBS 58) -- In Western Wisconsin, a towboat with two barges were no match for the strong currents on the Mississippi River overnight.

The Army Corps of Engineers says around 11:00 p.m. last night, on May 21, the towboat was approaching lock and dam number 4 when the current pulled it away, and spun both the boat and the barges around in the opposite direction.

The cables holding the barges together and to the towboat snapped and all three crashed into the dam.

Nobody was hurt and none of the barge loads emptied into the river.

Engineers will inspect the dam for any damage
