MILWAUKEE COUNTY, Wis. (CBS 58) – As the end of the energy moratorium nears, several thousand people are expected to sign up for assistance on their energy bills in Milwaukee County.

On Wednesday, dozens of people went to sign up for the assistance program through the county. The county is providing $1 million for the program. More than 3,500 households are expected to sign up. Throughout the month of March, WE Energies customers who sign up and qualify for the program can get $300 toward their bill.

To sign up for the program, customers must have paid at least two monthly bills since October. They also must live in the county.

One local student says without the assistance, she doesn’t know how she would make ends meet.

“Because I’m a student it has a lot of impact on me being able to get the resources I need,” Kayla Spain said. “[and] not being afraid or ashamed to do it.”

Anyone can sign up for energy assistance through May 15. The moratorium ends on April 15. Customers with overdue bills and who may be at risk of getting their power shut off in April will be given notices beginning March 27.
