Ten people displaced in south side duplex fire

MILWAUKEE-- 10 people are displaced after a fire at a south side duplex.

The fire happened around 8:30 a.m. Sunday at a home on the 2100 block of S. 18th Street.

A family of three living in the lower level of the duplex is thankful to the fire department for getting them out of the home safely.

They said that they didn't even know that there was a fire until firefighters showed up and got them out of the home.

The fire started in the attic of the duplex. It was contained to the upper floors, but there was water damage done to the lower level.

At one point, the smoke became so bad that the next door neighbors also had to evacuate.

No one was hurt.

The fire department said that while the damage was extensive the seven adults and three children who were displaced will likely eventually be able to return to their home.

For now, the Red Cross is assisting them.
