Telemundo Wisconsin's Montse Ricossa helps celebrate Read Across America Day
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- It's National Read Across America Day. Throughout the country, kids and families are encouraged to read.
Telemundo Wisconsin's Montse Ricossa was at Penfield Children's Center in Milwaukee on Thursday, March 2, as a volunteer reader.
National Read Across America Day is celebrated on March 2 because it's Dr. Suess' birthday.
At Penfield Children's Center, they had volunteers from all over the community step in -- like David Crowley from Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley, Kohl's, and they partnered with Rooted MKE, a local bookstore to celebrate diverse authors and Black history.
"Read Across America Day, we've kind of been celebrating it all month in a way with Black history month, just introducing the children to African American characters, books written by African American authors, and just stories on the culture," said Ana Cortez, director of early education and care.
Educators say even taking a few minutes every night to read to your kids makes all the difference.
"Having that representation, helping them to comment on things, question things, and being able to identify things, whether it’s reading a book, whether it’s a book on what they feel, fine motor skills, it ties things all together. it overall helps with communication and developing that," added Cortez.
Celebrate year-round with your favorite books and let's celebrate reading.
Penfield Children's Center is collaborating with Kohl's Building Blocks to offer resources, including books on African American and Latino culture. You can find that by clicking here.
