MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Rising cases of COVID-19 forces a well-known outreach center to close its winter shelter in Milwaukee. The Street Angels warming room will close Monday, Jan. 10 for the rest of the season.
On Facebook, Street Angels shared that it's seen a 20 to 30% increase in staff and guests testing positive. The non-profit says the high transmission rate of the Omicron variant has made it unsafe to keep the warming room operating.
"We know that closing our space is going to have a detrimental impact on the already overwhelmed system. So our work here is not done," reads the Facebook post.
Street Angels says they will continue to focus on outreach for Milwaukee's homeless population.
