Stephen Colbert Inspires School Funding

(CBS) DonorsChoose.org is a website that uses crowdfunding to help public school students and teachers, and more than 50 actors, athletes and entrepreneurs have pledged to fully fund all public school grant requests on the site for specific areas.

"The Late Show" host Stephen Colbert inspired these donations after funding all #BestSchoolDay public school projects last spring in his home state of South Carolina. He first engaged with DonorsChoose.org when he ran for the South Carolina Democratic Primary in 2007. Instead of accepting donations for his campaign, he directed supporters to donate to classrooms in need in his honor, totaling $70,000. He also hands gift cards to every guest on The Late Show to support a classroom project of his or her choice.

Philanthropist Elsa Brule has volunteered to fund all of the projects in Milwaukee.

There are 13 projects currently listed on DonorsChoose in Milwaukee County totaling over $20,000. To see the full list and donate to a project of your choice click here.

Colbert has been a DonorsChoose.org board member since 2009.
