Souls to the Polls providing free rides to Milwaukee voting sites for Tuesday's election

NOW: Souls to the Polls providing free rides to Milwaukee voting sites for Tuesday’s election

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) – The spring general election and presidential preference vote is Tuesday, April 2 in Wisconsin.

Polling places are open Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and voting advocacy group Souls to the Polls has dozens of volunteers to provide rides to every polling place in Milwaukee.

"This is kind of the tester for what needs to be done in November," said Rev. Gregory Lewis, president of Souls to the Polls.

The spring election is the start of what's sure to be a busy year in politics, and Lewis wants to remind Milwaukeeans that every vote counts.

"This is the way you have a voice; this is the way you put people in place who look out for your interests, this is the way that you look out for yourself, is to vote," Lewis said.

To ensure transportation isn't a barrier, Souls to the Polls will provide free rides to all Milwaukee polling places Tuesday.

"We'll take you to the poll, wait for you to go in and vote, you come back out, and we'll take you home," Lewis explained.

Souls to the Polls has been providing free rides for over a decade.

"I used to do all these rides myself. I used to take people to the polls alone," Lewis recalled.

Now, they have around 30 volunteers helping out for each election.

"If you're disabled, if you're elderly, people in community, we need you to call, and we have these volunteers just waiting for your call," Lewis said.

Wisconsin voters must bring a photo ID or drivers license to their polling place.

Wisconsin DMVs have extended hours Monday and Tuesday where residents can pick up ID cards if needed.

You can register to vote at your polling place Tuesday with proof of current residency.

Rev. Lewis hopes the soggy forecast doesn't deter people from exercising their right to vote.

"They say if you don't like the weather, just wait, it'll change. Don't let that stop you. Come out, express yourself with the sheer power that the vote gives you," Lewis said.
