Sons of Bruce Froemming, MLB umpire and Mequon native, remember ‘fiery’ father on and off the diamond
Froemming family MEQUON, Wis. (CBS 58) – Bruce Froemming, a legendary MLB umpire and Mequon native, died on Wednesday Feb. 25.
His sons, Steven Froemming and Kevin Froemming, spoke with CBS 58 at his home on Monday, March 2, surrounded by photos and pictures from his lengthy career.
“My dad and I did so many things together. We went to the World Series together, we went to the playoffs together,” Steven Froemming said. “Although my dad is gone, the stories and the laughter through others will live on.”
“I think it's pretty amazing that he touched a bunch of different people, as tough as he could be, I think he made a huge impact on the game and people in the game,” Kevin Froemming said.
Bruce Froemming was an umpire for 37 consecutive seasons in the MLB, working the third-most games in history. Steven Froemming and Kevin Froemming knew him as their tough but loving dad.
“He was a lot like he was on the baseball field. He was fiery, you didn’t want to cross him, and when you did, you heard about it,” Kevin Froemming said.
Family members said Bruce Froemming fell at his home after midnight on Tuesday, Feb. 24. He died surrounded by his family at an area hospital the next day.
CBS 58 previously spoke to Bruce Froemming and Steven Froemming while the Milwaukee Brewers made their playoff run in October.
Services honoring Bruce Froemming are planned for Saturday, March 7. There will be a visitation from 11:00 am to 1:30 pm at the Schramka-Densow Funeral Home, 423 N. Main St., Thiensville. The funeral service will take place at 2:00 pm at Grace Lutheran Church, 303 Green Bay Rd, Thiensville, located 2 blocks from the Funeral Home.
