Snow covers roads as Milwaukee's DPW crews battle high winds

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Travel conditions across Southeastern Wisconsin are dangerous as the snow mixed with the wind is making visibility less than ideal. Milwaukee’s Department of Public Works (DPW) has crews on the road clearing up that snow.

For many people, commute times doubled as snow piled onto the streets and interstate. DPW plows have been out on the roads since 8 p.m.  Sunday, trying to clear some of it up.

DPW says it's difficult to treat the roads, not because of how much snow is coming down, but the way it's coming down. DPW has what’s called a full snow operation out on the streets. That means in addition to the department's regular salt trucks and plows, they’ve got garbage trucks and recycling trucks helping plow the streets.

City officials said the rain on Saturday and Sunday afternoon made it difficult to brine the streets like usual. Because of how quickly the rain transitioned into snow, a thin layer of ice formed on many streets. Coupled with the wind, the snow blowing everywhere covered several roads.

“We’re continually going over roadway, over roadway, over roadway, over roadway, more than we normally would, because as soon as we’re done, couple hours later, it looks like we just weren’t there, and it’s like a thin, one-inch layer sitting there," said DPW Commissioner Jerrel Kruschke. “All across the city, and I mean, if you look at all across the state right now, it’s just the high winds that are really affecting travel across the entire state of Wisconsin.”

DPW crews expect roads to be cleared up Monday night.
