Six Flags Great America previews 50th anniversary celebration happening this summer
Six Flags GURNEE, Ill. (CBS 58) -- Six Flags Great America is marking 50 years with a summer-long celebration running June 20 through Aug. 9, the park announced Wednesday, March 19.
Some of the special highlights include a new nighttime spectacular with a stage show, parade and weekend drone shows, a legacy museum featuring historic artifacts and memorabilia from the park's five decades, the return of an ice cream parlor from the park's 1976 opening year and live entertainment paying tribute to each decade.
There will also reportedly be photo opportunities to recreate memories throughout the park, along with food and beverages that pay tribute to nostalgic taste buds, including classic root bear and more limited time items that will only be around for the celebration.
The park first opened as Marriott's Great America in 1976. Six Flags Great America's 2026 season begins April 25.
