Sheboygan Falls community holds vigil to pay respects to Canadian tourist who was shot, killed on golf trip in Wisconsin
SHEBOYGAN FALLS, Wis. (CBS 58) -- On the side of Monroe St. in the town of Sheboygan Falls on Thursday, Oct. 2, a small group gathered by a memorial.
Carefully placed on the ground were bouquets of flowers and candles as a tribute to Giovanni Michael Robinson, a Canadian tourist who was in town on a golf trip when he was shot and killed last month.
Investigators are now charging Luis Cruz-Burgos, a DoorDash driver, with first-degree reckless homicide.
Officials said Robinson and his friends asked Cruz-Burgos for a ride to their hotel in Kohler just minutes away, but the group couldn't agree on a price, so they decided to walk.
According to court documents, after Cruz-Burgos finished his food delivery, he drove back and shot out of his car.
"I was shocked," said Jessica Flairty, who lives up the road from where the shooting happened. "It was very surprising because it's such a small town."
Flairty said she wanted to attend the community-led vigil to pay her respects.
"It's a very sad tragedy that his family had to go through this," Flairty said. "It's a blessing to show the family that the Sheboygan Falls community cares."
Next to the flowers during the vigil was a TV that was livestreaming Robinson's funeral that was happening simultaneously in Canada.
Flairty said she hopes Robinson's family knows they're not alone.
"God is with you, and he is there to watch over you guys and keep you comforted during this tragic time," Flairty said.
Cruz-Burgos will appear in court next week for two hearings.
