OAK CREEK, Wis. (CBS 58) — Police in Oak Creek are investigating after a man was killed in a shooting Tuesday morning.

The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office identified the victim Wednesday as 22-year-old Luis Ares.

According to the Oak Creek Police Department, officers responded just after 8 a.m. after receiving several 911 calls about gunshots near 20th and W. College Avenue.

Officers put up tape around the College Court Apartments. According to a press release, they found one person in a car with gunshot wounds.

Despite lifesaving efforts, Ares died on the scene.

Law enforcement remained at the scene for more than eight hours Tuesday, taping off the entire parking lot and several pieces of evidence throughout it.

"It's inconceivable to me that would actually happen here, you know?" said Stephanie Sanchez, who lives in the mobile home community right next to the apartment complex.

Her phone rang minutes after she left for work on Tuesday morning.

"My son called me and said, 'Mom, there's gunfire, there's gunfire, there's a ton of shots,'" she said. "Automatically, I thought, it's got to be something else."

Despite her disbelief, she learned her son was right.

"I knew immediately what it was when I heard it," said Tom Sujecki, who lives a few blocks away from the scene.

He was one of several neighbors who called 911 after hearing nearly a dozen gunshots.

"There are literally hundreds of people just in this radius of where a bullet could fly," Sanchez said.

Oak Creek police confirm they are investigating the incident as a homicide.

"It's disheartening, especially this time of year. We've got Christmas coming and everything," Sujecki said. "It's the worst thing."

Sanchez' neighbor said he saw two cars chasing each other into the complex before shots were fired. On the scene, officers have placed evidence markers around a white SUV with bullet holes in the windshield as well as a smashed-up grey sedan.

First responders set up privacy barriers near the SUV, where the medical examiner responded.

"The street's right there, my house is right here. My son could have been shot sitting on the couch," said Sanchez.

While she is thankful her son is okay, she is heartbroken by the tragedy that happened so close to home.

"He's tough, but shootings have been a fear of his because of the world we live in," Sanchez explained. "He knows the ugly truth, and it scares him."
