Shakespeare's 'Henry IV, Part 1' to be staged by First Stage's Young Company

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- First Stage's Young Company is preparing to present William Shakespeare's "Henry IV, Part 1" in the Goodman Mainstage Hall at the Milwaukee Youth Arts Center.

Directed by Marcella Kearns, the production features the company's advanced high school actors and runs from Dec. 8 - Dec. 17. The play has long been known for its blend of royal drama and comedic elements.

It centers on the strained relationship between King Henry IV and his son, Prince Hal. While the kingdom braces for war against domestic and foreign threats, Prince Hal grapples with the responsibilities of royalty and his carefree life with Sir John Falstaff. The play explores the dynamics of leadership and loyalty, along with the personal growth of Hal as he transitions from a wayward prince to a leader.

In a Thursday, Nov. 16 press release, director Marcella Kearns shared insight into the production's relevance

"The historical context mirrors contemporary themes of youth grappling with societal changes," Kearns stated. "Our young actors bring a unique perspective to these timeless questions of leadership and moral choices."

A special Pay What You Choose performance is scheduled for Dec. 15 at 7:00 p.m., allowing more accessibility to this classic piece of theatre.
