Sen. Baldwin meets with VA employees, local veterans over mass firings and cuts to Dept. of Veterans Affairs
MILWAUKEE, (CBS 58) -- Democratic Senator Tammy Baldwin met with Milwaukee VA employees and local veterans on Sat. May 3 to discuss the recent mass firings and cuts to the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Sen. Baldwin hosted a roundtable at the Milwaukee Building Trades Council along Bluemound Road to talk about the impact of President Trump and Elon Musk's cuts to the agency.
In a memo from the agency's Chief of Staff earlier this year, the Trump administration announced plans to fire up to 80,000 VA employees.
The administration has already fired 2,400 VA employees thus far.
During the roundtable, Sen. Baldwin stressed the importance of veteran services. "These are essential services, and these are keeping the promises that we've made to people who have downed the uniform and have gone into harm's way on behalf of all of our freedoms," Baldwin said. "We need to keep those promises."
The President's plans to slash the VA workforce could impact the Milwaukee VA.
Roughly 4,500 people work there now and many of them are veterans themselves.
