WISCONSIN (CBS 58) -- The roar of IndyCar will be heard to the north, as action starts Thursday at Road America. CBS 58 Sports Director Lance Allan sat down with Chicago native David Malukas, who loves his place.
"For me, this is only just a short, about hour-and-a-half drive to come up here," Malukas says. "And I've always ended up coming up here in the Wisconsin area with my dad. Back then, I mean, he wasn't a proper professional or anything but he just -on the weekends- some fun that we would do. And that was over there in Road America. But we always came to the Wisconsin area, so to me, this has always felt very close to home. And out of any state foods I've tried the most, it definitely is cheese curds, so this is home to me."
So, he's an honorary Wisconsinite then even though he's from Illinois? That's good.
"Well, I don't know if we get that level yet, but we're getting there," Malukas says with a laugh. "Road America was something that, when I was very, very, young, before I even started any sort of driving and go-carting, my dad would actually just go in his Corvette, and he would go around. And I would, of course, be there as a kid just watching. But it was where I think the first sparks in me wanting to drive started. It was kind of the starting points and the roots of what we're now at here today, in 2025, in IndyCar. It's very cool to look back to. It's that starting point. But yeah, a lot of special moments at Road America, and now I get to say I'm racing there in IndyCar. Professionally. And my parents are there. They're watching. And it's just very cool to see. I wish we took more photos back then, you know, of me as a kid, just to do the comparison of how much it's come. So, it's one of those moments that, you know, you have a dream and it's possible to achieve it."
