Riverwest Food Pantry teamed up with Palermo's Pizza to give away 200 Easter baskets

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Riverwest Food Pantry and Palermo's Pizza teamed up to provide families with an Easter dinner on Saturday, March 27.

They gave out 200 Easter baskets Saturday morning. Families went home with an Easter ham, fresh produce, and frozen pizzas.

There were about 30 volunteers on site. On average, the food pantry gives out 150 meals on any given Saturday.

Sunday is Palm Sunday. Christians around the world will commemorate the start of Holy Week that ends next Sunday with Easter.

Jewish families will also celebrate Passover beginning Saturday night.

The holiday was one of the first major religious events affected by the pandemic. Although vaccinations have ramped up, many are opting for virtual or scaled-down celebrations again this year.

Passover marks the story of Jewish slaves escaping their Egyptian owners. The holiday starts at sundown and lasts for seven days.
