MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- If you frequently find yourself speeding through the zoo interchange, you might want to watch your speedometer.
The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office is cracking down on speeders through the area, suturing the area with extra deputies.
“I am very concerned about our freeway system,” said Acting Sheriff Richard Schmidt. “I want that tightened up.”
Wednesday morning, deputies handed out 26 tickets in less than 2 hours. Every single citation was issued to someone going more than 15 mph over the speed limit.
Friday night, MCSO took CBS-58 along for the ride. Within minutes, Deputy Ryan Richards found a driver going 71 in a 50.
“You can frequently get 15 over, definitely,” he said. “What we’re trying to do here is just make sure everyone gets home safe.”
Word for the wise, a ticket for going 20 over can run you more than $200.
The Sheriff’s Office hopes that motivates people to slow down.
“We’re talking about 15, 20, 25, 30 miles over the limit,” says Schmidt. “That can not happen.”
Schmidt says there is no timeline for additional saturation.
