Residents in shock after several vehicles submerge under water during flash flooding
WEST ALLIS, Wis (CBS58) — On Saturday, Aug. 9, the flash flood filled basements, took over streets and submerged cars in its path.
"When we looked out our windows it was like a river in this area where I'm standing," said Dena Deberry a West Allis resident.
Deberry lives in an apartment at 83rd and Orchard in West Allis.
"For this to happen in the short time that it did it's pretty scary because the water accumulated very fast," said Deberry.
While her home is okay, her car is stuck floating in the buildings parking garage.
"We were just told that there's 10 feet of water in our garage, they're not even parked in the stalls where we put them," Deberry explained.
Across the street Lloyd Buckner's beloved garden is in ruins.
"We love it. We love the tomatoes, peppers, I use my fence as a trellis," said Buckner.
However, he found his prized veggies bobbing in the water.
"We tried to get them and put them on the steps get them a little bit out of it," Buckner explained.
As the water rose Buckner and his wife prepared for the worst.
"We packed a couple bags put them in garbage bags, so they stayed dry, and we were going to wade across the pond and get top higher ground," said Buckner.
He says now it's time to rebuild.
"You can get mad, you can scream, you can cry the fact is you just have to roll up your sleeves and get stuff done," said Buckner.
