Republican-led bill regulating data centers in Wisconsin clears Assembly
CBS 58 MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- In a 53-44 vote, a Republican-led bill looking to put new limits on data centers cleared the Assembly Tuesday, Jan. 20.
A few key parts of this bill would make sure people are protected from rising power costs. It also requires data centers to recycle water and report all water use to the state.
"We have been very thoughtful in what we put forward, making sure rate payers are protected, making sure land is protected and the environment. and making sure, ultimately, that we have a bill that can be signed into law," said Assembly Speaker Robin Vos.
Republicans are celebrating the bill, but Democrats are calling it "unserious." They say the proposed regulations don't go far enough.
"This body should make clear that we will not accept any cost from data centers being passed onto rate payers," said state Rep. Greta Neubauer (D-Racine0. "That would be an unacceptable outcome."
The bill still has to pass in the Senate before heading to the governor's desk.
Even if it does pass, Governor Evers says he will likely veto it.
