MILWAUKEE--Firefighters will tell you one of the most important things to have in your home is a smoke detector.

The American Red Cross  alongside fire fighters and other volunteers spent Saturday morning installing smoke detectors in homes located in the Thurston Woods neighborhood. They also taught home owners about fire safety.

Dicie James was very grateful when she saw who was at her door-step. \"I'm just very glad,\" said James.

The smoke detectors were free and installed by one of the volunteers.

\"This year we kicked off our fire initiative to reduce fire deaths by 25 percent,\" said Red Cross Spokesperson Barbara Behling.
