MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The new year was rung in with dozens of gunshots fired across the city of Milwaukee, during what some are calling a dangerous New Year's Day tradition.

Some of those gunshots were caught in a viral video and shared on social media. The video racked up thousands of views and shares.

"A Milwaukee tradition. They do it every year, literally every year," said Peezyante, a Milwaukee social media influencer.

Peezyante said the minutes leading up to New Year's Day in his neighborhood sounded like a war zone.

"Call of Duty match, that's why I put in the caption, "Rebirth Island," because that's what it sounded like," said Peezyante.

The influencer lives near Sherman Park. He said minutes before the clock struck midnight on New Year's Eve, celebratory gunfire rang out.

"Now what I am about to show you all, I am by no means proud of," said Peezyante, in a video he posted on TikTok to his more than 100,000 followers.

The influencer posted video of the gunfire to TikTok and it has more than 700,000 views.

"Y'all gotta hear it firsthand, how it sounds if you're out here, you know what I mean, so they can get the full emerging inside the Milwaukee experience," said Peezyante.

According to Milwaukee police, the department received 86 reports of shots fired throughout the city of Milwaukee between 11:55 p.m. and 1 a.m.

"That’s really negligent, negligent as hell, but they gone do what they gone do," said Peezyante.

Peezyante said he's thankful no one was hurt.

"It’s a blessing that, you know, we didn’t wake up and hear any tragic story about stray bullets hitting anybody, but that's definitely a huge possibility that could happen. It’s a blessing it didn’t," said the influencer.

According to the Milwaukee Police Department, no one was injured or killed from gunfire on New Year's Eve or New Year's Day.
