Racine & Me: Racine playwright's award-winning drama makes its stage debut

RACINE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A powerful new play written by a Racine playwright is about to make its world premiere.

The Good One, written by Amy Hanson and directed by Diane Carlson, opens July 24 as the first production of Over Our Head Players' 35th season.

The original drama centers on Natalie Morgan, who arrives at a hospital after her sister, Piper, is placed on life support following an overdose. As their mother joins them and difficult decisions loom, long-buried family tensions, secrets and memories begin to surface.

While the subject matter is serious, the play balances moments of heartbreak with dark humor, offering an honest look at family relationships, addiction, love and loss.

Before reaching the stage, The Good One earned recognition from several playwriting competitions, including finalist honors in the Henley Rose Playwright Competition for Women, Wisconsin Wrights and the Ashland New Plays Festival.

The production is part of Over Our Head Players' Root Cause initiative, a program designed to support local artists by developing and presenting original works from area writers and creators. It is also included in World Premiere Wisconsin, a statewide festival celebrating new plays and musicals.

Hanson and Carlson joined Racine & Me to discuss the story behind the play, the collaborative process of bringing it to life and what they hope audiences take away from the experience.

The Good One runs July 24 through Aug. 2 at the Sixth Street Theatre, located at 318 Sixth St. in downtown Racine. A free talk-back with Hanson will be held July 26 following the afternoon matinee at Vintage & Modern Books.
