Racine man in custody accused of two hit-and-run accidents Friday night.

MOUNT PLEASANT, WI (CBS 58) -- A 45-year-old Racine man is custody today and accused of not one but two hit-and-run accidents in the Village of Mount Pleasant Friday night.

Around 10:50 PM, Mount Pleasant Police responded to a hit and run accident in the area of Durand Avenue and Meachem Road where they found a vehicle in the front yard of a residence.

While investigating the accident, the Officers were called to another hit-and-run accident that had happened minutes earlier on Durand Avenue and Wood Road.   In that accident, a car struck a pick-up truck stopped at a stoplight and then fled the scene.

As they investigated the accidents, Officers determined the same car was involved in both accidents.

Witnesses told Officers that after the car struck the pick-up truck at Durand and Wood, it sped away east bound on Durand and attempted to  turn south onto Meachem Road.    The driver lost control of the car, swerved into the north bound lanes of Meachem, struck the curb and continued into the front yard of a residence, struck  a tree, spun around and came to a rest in the driveway. The driver had fled the area on foot but was later found hiding behind a parked car.

The driver, Luis Tapia, failed a Field Sobriety Test and was arrested by Mount Pleasant Police.   He is facing charges of Hit and Run, 2nd Degree Recklessly Endangering Safety, OWI 1st,  No Insurance, Failure to Maintain Control and Inattentive Driving.   He is currently in the Racine County Jail with a $12,500 bail.
