Racine County Sheriff's Office K-9 put to sleep after unexpected medical emergency
RACINE COUNTY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The Racine County Sheriff's Office is mourning the loss of one of their own.
Friday, March 31, K-9 Murphy suffered an unexpected medical emergency while at home. His deputy handler transported him to the vet but there was nothing that could be done. Murphy, surrounded by family, was humanely put to sleep.
According to a news release, K-9 Murphy was born Aug. 10, 2012, in Hungary. Racine County Sheriff's Office Deputy Dave Fisher was paired with K-9 Murphy in 2013 at the Southern Police Canine facility in North Carolina. After graduating, the pair worked the overnight shift protecting the community.
The sheriff's office says K-9 Murphy was a dual-purpose dog helping in narcotic detection, evidence/article search, building search, tracking, handler protection, and criminal apprehension. Over the course of K-9 Murphy’s career, he and Deputy Fisher had well over 2,500 training hours with nearly 600 career deployments.
Over the last couple of years, Deputy Fisher and K-9 Murphy were primarily assigned to the training division where the team commonly assisted with community relations, conducted checks on schools and detention facilities for illegal drugs, and assisting on the streets when needed.
Deputy Fisher had planned to retire K-9 Murphy at the end of this year.
May he rest in peace.
