Racine County Sheriff's Office first to use heroin counteracting drug

RACINE -- The Racine County Sheriff's Office just began using narcan, a drug previously only available by prescription. Narcan is a drug first responders can use to stop heroin overdoses.

Governor Walker signed a bill into law this year allowing Narcan to be more easily available. Racine County Sheriff Christopher Schmaling says his department is the first to use narcan. Every Racine County Sheriff's squad car has a kit with narcan. They kits are also at the county jail and courthouse.
