RACINE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Racine community activist Ricardo Fierro has been deported to Mexico after a year-long legal battle.
According to the Racine Interfaith Coalition, he was apprehended by ICE agents at his home in July 2018 and transferred to several different detention centers.
Fierro's family did not receive official notification of his deportation from officials.
"We've expected it several times, hoped and prayed it wouldn't happen, but most recently it was a last ditch effort," said Tamerin Hayward, co-president of the Racine Interfaith Coalition. "We kept raising money for lawyers, and LULAC has been wonderful in helping with that."
In the weeks following Fierro's initial arrest, people throughout the community rallied to support him.
