Racer dies after participating in half marathon

 On Saturday, a male racer died after running in the Summerfest Rock n' Sole half marathon. 

The 20-year-old was taken to Columbia St. Mary's where he was pronounced dead.

Summerfest officials released the following statement:

\"It is with sincere regret that we confirm one of our participants passed away at a local hospital today after experiencing a medical emergency just after completing the Summerfest Rock n' Sole event. 

We thoroughly plan and prepare for these rare episodes and every appropriate precaution and procedure was in place and activated to care for our runner at the moment of need.

“Both Summerfest Foundation, Inc. and Vision Event Management take emergency planning and implementation extremely seriously, utilizing teams of seasoned emergency responders, including fire, EMS, medical and law enforcement to respond to these isolated, yet high priority occurrences,” said Dr. Riccardo Colella, Race Medical Director and Milwaukee County EMS Medical Director. 

We are deeply saddened, as both race organizers and fellow runners.  Our thoughts and prayers are with the runner's family and our entire organization extends its deepest condolences.\"

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.
