Purse stolen from Holy Hill recovered after tips from public
CBS 58 HUBERTUS, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A purse stolen from Holy Hill in December has been recovered, the Washington County Sheriff's Office announced Thursday, Jan. 8.
The purse belonged to Mary Grace North, who left it at the Holy Hill café on Dec. 29 while attending a live nativity. The bag contained about $2,000 in cash, credit cards and a medical port card North needs for chemotherapy treatment.
Deputies say they received several tips after posting about the investigation, indicating the purse had been returned and identifying a person believed to be involved, according to the sheriff's office. Deputies found the purse on the front porch of a former home associated with North.
Most of the contents, including a substantial amount of cash, were recovered, the sheriff's office said. Not all contents have been recovered and final verification is ongoing.
Sheriff Martin Schulteis said social media and news coverage helped bring the case to a successful conclusion by reaching the right people quickly.
The sheriff's office is working with North to determine what law enforcement action will be taken.
