MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A proposed memorial in Warnimont Park to honor Sade Robinson is being put on pause, with the author of the proposal essentially stopping the process.
Robinson, a Black woman from Milwaukee, was killed last year.
Supervisor Juan Miguel Martinez came up with the idea for the memorial and has been in contact with Robinson's family.
He described some of the community response after his proposal and why he's pulling it after conversations with Robinson's mother.
"What we got in exchange, was a flurry of racist emails saying that, 'why should Black folk get this when white folk don't get this,'" Sup. Martinez said. "She wanted me to withdraw it, and I was going to withdraw it because I did come to the conclusion that yes, maybe taxpayers shouldn't be footing this bill."
Other committee members also talked about getting emails they described as racist and condemned the behavior.
The proposal is now stalled indefinitely.
