Detailing the process of counting absentee ballots in Wisconsin

MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A great deal of trust goes into handing an absentee ballot over to election officials, for those who made the decision to vote that way. What does that process look like?

When Election Day ends, poll workers start counting ballots and checking registration forms to ensure there are no mistakes in signatures or addresses.

The ballots are then put into a bag for safekeeping.

From there, the bag goes to each local clerk's office where the process happens again before going into the vault.

Jim Verbick, Madison Deputy Clerk offered more details to CBS 58, saying, "There are locks on the door that only clerk staff have access to. It's in City of Madison property that no other agencies access, other than the clerk's office, and there are video cameras that are videoing the areas around that room."

After storage in the vault, the ballots make their final trip to your ward's polling place on Election Day where they are officially counted.
