MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) --- The holiday shopping season is underway, which means porch pirates are on the move.
Package thieves are a problem year after year, but there are ways you can avoid becoming a victim.
The Better Business Bureau is providing some helpful tips you can use to protect your packages this season. The biggest reminder is to try your best to retrieve your package as soon as possible.
A security.com study found that porch pirates stole an estimated $18 billion in merchandise in 2023.
The BBB says packages delivered to homes within 25 feet of the road are most vulnerable.
If you're not home when your package arrives, other helpful tips include:
- Ask a neighbor or friend to retrieve your delivery for you
- Some retailers, like Amazon, offer "garage delivery" to avoid having packages sitting out in the open
- Ship to store or post office box
- Use a security camera to deter package theft
- Set up your camera alerts so that you know exactly when the package is delivered
- Require a signature
- Set up notifications to remind you the date and time of expected delivery
- If a package thief makes it away with your delivery, be sure to report the crime to law enforcement and notify the retailer so you can request a refund or replacement.
