Arrest warrant issued for man accused of breaking into apartment near Marquette University

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Police are searching for a Milwaukee man who they say broke into an off-campus apartment near Marquette University with two residents sleeping inside. 

Police say 30-year-old Deandre Morgan broke through a first-floor window at an apartment building on Kilbourn Avenue Sunday morning, Aug. 2. 

Court documents say two residents flagged down a Marquette University police officer around 5:40 a.m. and said there was someone in their home. Officers allegedly found Morgan sitting on a couch on the second floor, next to two empty liquor bottles, a blue shopping bag full of items and a black backpack.

According to the criminal complaint, officers located a rock and broken glass on the bed on the first floor, and a broken window. 

"A little nerve-wracking, but I also trust our MUPD here and I do believe they're working really hard to get them caught," said Marquette University senior Emily Ramirez. "But not necessarily the greatest feeling to know he's still out there."

Morgan was originally charged with misdemeanors and released on bond, but later, prosecutors upgraded his charges to felonies, prompting a new warrant for his arrest. 

In a statement Tuesday, Marquette University said:

Through preventative police measures, community training and resources, and proactive safety messaging, MUPD is committed to fostering a safe environment in which to live, work and learn."

Morgan faces two counts of burglary to a dwelling with a person present and criminal damage to property.
