Police, Medical Examiner on Scene Near 28th & Wells for Infant Death

Milwaukee Police are trying to figure out how a baby died.

Police arrived on scene early Sunday morning near 28th and Wells.

According to witnesses, the mother realized her infant wasn't breathing.

Desheyla Toombs was almost 4 months old.

A minister at Covenant Community Church, Shon Milt, spent the morning praying for for the little girl.

"They allowed me to go in the room... innocent baby laying there three months old. The baby appeared to be clean, and she looked like her dad. She didn't deserve to die," said Milt.

Seeing the infant was even hard on police. Milt says one officer broke down.

"He hugged me. We hugged each other, and I prayed," said Milt.

Desheyla's grandmother tells CBS58 she doesn't believe anyone hurt her grandchild, and that it may have been a co-sleeping death.

Milt says police told her the infant's death was suspicious.

"[Police] pulled me to the side he said this is now becoming an investigation of a homicide," said Milt.

Milt doesn't know what happened, so shes turning to faith.

"I hugged him. I prayed with dad. I prayed with mom. I prayed with everybody in the apartment," said Milt.

MPD hasn't said anything about the girls death. The Medical Examiner is investigation. An autopsy will be done Monday.
