Plane crash en route to Oshkosh EAA

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (CBS 58) -- According to a report from the Fond du Lac Sheriff's Office, a small plane heading to EAA in Oshkosh crashed on Saturday, July 22 around 7:51 p.m. in the area of Highway 49 and Hemp in the Township of Waupun.

The report says that the pilot of the plane was able to radio the Fond Du Lac County Dispatch center to let them know where they were. The plane crashed in a large marsh that made it hard for rescuers to find the plane and then get to it.

Local fire departments used UTV's in finding the plane. Once located, two people in the plane were able to be transported out of the wetlands.

The plane, a single engine ERCO Ercoupe, was flying from Cedar Rapids and crashed ten minutes away from its destination. The pilot said the engine suddenly lost power and he was forced to make an emergency landing.

One of the plane's wings was damaged and the pilot was treated for a possible shoulder injury.

The pilot, a 76-year-old man and the copilot, a 71-year-old man, are from Texas and were flying from there to the Oshkosh EAA AirVenture.

The City of Fond du Lac Police Department assisted with a drone operator and a drone.

As of now the crash is still under investigation.
