MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Our state and local leaders, alongside the Latvian Diaspora, gathered at city hall in Milwaukee to celebrate the Republic of Latvia's 107th Independence Day from the Russian Empire.
The celebration included people dressed in historic clothes, singing traditional songs and paying tribute to their heritage.
Lieutenant Governor Sara Rodriguez and Mayor Cavalier Johnson issued a proclamation honoring Latvian culture week, which started on Nov. 11th and runs through the 18th.
The speaker at today's, Nov. 16, event say that while the immigrants who came here have made a new life for themselves, it's important to recognize their roots, "Let us remember Latvia is not just a place on a map. It lives in our hearts, our families, our communities. It is here in Milwaukee where your energy, pride and dedication make our heritage vibrant and strong."
The flag of Ukraine sat next to the Latvian and American flags on stage. That's because Latvia has spent billions on aid to Ukraine in its ongoing fight against Russia's invasion, something Latvians have experience sing the 1500s.
