BURLINGTON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A teen on a bicycle was killed after trying to beat a train. The community left shook.

Tonight, police have identified that teen as 16-year-old Jack Meyers -- a junior at Burlington High School.

Officials say a little after 12:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon, they received several calls of a bicyclist hit by a moving train near Adams and Bridge Street.

"Reports reveal that the bicyclist appeared to be traveling eastbound, disregarded traffic control as well as the crossing signals and was struck by a southbound Canadian National train," said Burlington Police Chief Brian Zmudzinski.

Chief Brian Zmudzinski says the teen rode around the train barricades and was fatally struck.

This tragedy shaking this close community.

"I've lived here all my life and never ever heard of anything this tragic happening here," said neighbor Alex Marotske.

For Marotske, it's changed the way he'll monitor his children.

"We have created rules that they are not allowed to ride bikes downtown by themselves until they're 18," said Marotske.

Chief Zmudzinski indicated another person was with the teen, but says they weren't hurt.

He also says they are working with the Racine County Sheriff's Department on this investigation.

He shares a warning for his community.

"We do have a considerate amount of train traffic in the community. It's never a good idea trying to save a couple minutes off your day by beating the traffic controls for the trains. It's there for a reason. Sadly, today, we found that out," said Chief Brian Zmudzinski.

Chief Zmudzinski says this is still an ongoing investigation, and the family is distraught.
